Description
Calcitonin Salmon is an artificial version of a hormone, calcitonin, naturally found in humans and fish, including salmon. Calcitonin is produced normally in the human body from the thyroid gland and occurs naturally in salmon. Calcitonin has been used clinically for over 50 years for the treatment of several bone-related conditions because it influenced calcium metabolism and reduces osteoclastic bone resorption. New Calcitonin Salmon will be primarily used in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, particularly in women who do not want to take estrogen or cannot take estrogen. In addition, it is indicated for the treatment of other conditions, including Paget’s disease of bone and hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood), and also provides an analgesic benefit for bone pain and may help decrease fractures.
There are two known forms of Calcitonin Salmon, as a nasal spray and an injectable solution. The indications and recommendations route differs. The nasal spray is normally prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis, whereas the injectable form is generally used in hypercalcemia and also in Paget’s disease patients. Overall, the action of calcitonin salmon is a functional replacement for Natural Calcitonin, providing the same mechanism to maintain bone density and minimize bone loss.
Directions for Use of Calcitonin Salmon
Calcitonin Salmon are normally used for the treatment of
- Postmenopausal Osteoporosis
- Paget’s disease of bone
- Hypercalcemia
Mechanism of Action
Calcitonin Salmon binds the receptors on osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone resorption. By preventing the osteoclasts’ activities, it reduces the breakdown of bone tissue and helps to maintain the density of the bone. It helps in increasing the calcium in the kidneys. And lower body calcium in cases of hypercalcemia. The medication mimics the action of natural calcitonin, which is essential for calcium homeostasis and bone health.
Dosages of Calcitonin Salmon
The Calcitonin Salmon medicine must be taken according to the prescription provided by the doctor or healthcare provider, its use depends on the formulation of it, like;
Nasal Spray:
Typically, 200 IU (one spray) per nostril, alternating nostrils daily.
Injectable Solution:
For osteoporosis and Paget’s disease, the usual dose is 50–100 IU administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly daily or every other day.
For hypercalcemia, the dose may be higher and administered more frequently, based on the patient’s weight and response to treatment
