Description

Xylometazoline Hydrochloride IP Nasal spray is actively prescribed to treat and give temporary relief from congestion caused by to common cold, sinusitis, hay fever, and allergies. It belongs to the group of nasal decongestants. Xylometazoline is a direct-acting alpha-adrenergic agonist. It shouldn’t be used more than 7 days in a row, as it makes the nasal congestion worse, known as rebound congestion. Xylometazoline works by constricting inflamed blood vessels, hence,  clearing the airways, and allowing for a freer flow of air.

Due to its sympathomimetic effects, it is not recommended for people with high blood pressure or other heart problems. Nasal congestion is caused by rhinosinusitis and allergic or non-allergic rhinitis, leading to congestion of the venous sinusoids lining the nasal mucosa. It is used directly in the nose as a spray or drops.

Working Mechanism of Xylometazoline Hydrochloride IP Nasal Spray

Xylometazoline Hydrochloride is a decongestant, widely used in managing and treating the nasal conditions leading to a stuffy nose and inflammatory conditions due to allergies or colds.

When sprayed into the nasal cavity, xylometazoline binds to α1-adrenergic receptors present on the smooth muscle of nasal blood vessels.

Its effects are produced due to constriction of large veins in the nose, which swell up during the inflammation of any infection or allergy of the nose. It also decreases mucus secretion by reducing plasma exudation into nasal tissues.
